BWW Reviews: More Paean Than Parody In BRITNEY SPEARS: THE CABARET In Australia - 28 Jul 2014 18:24

Tags:

Now playing: Melbourne. Coming to Brisbane and Sydney - At first glance, Christie Whelan-Browne comes off as more Heidi Klum than Britney Spears. In her short black dress, the leggy Australian actress and singer looks closer to an off-duty supermodel than the diminutive pop princess who lends her name and fame to BRITNEY SPEARS: THE CABARET.
But something happens, and quickly. From her pitch-perfect Southern accent, to the self-conscious, slightly incredulous conversation, and the little gestures made to match, Whelan-Browne soon becomes Britney Spears. At first this embodiment comes as caricature, a cute, slightly daffy joke-Britney to warm up the audience. But then comes something closer to the truth - Spears portrayed as a vulnerable, confused young woman pushing at the seams of her own successful, but restrictive life.
Full kudos here to writer Dean Bryant for knowing how to get the audience on Britney's side. Make them laugh first, highlight the ridiculousness and excesses of celebrity life - and once the audience has dropped their guard, hit them with the truth. Remind them that most humour dances at the edge of sadness, tips over into it at times. When chronicling the life and music of Britney Jean Spears, even under the guise of Britney-does-Cabaret, you can't make fun too long. There's something a little heartbreaking about the girl-next-door who never really was, about the teenage superstar who was pushed and pulled by her parents, sold out by her lovers (JT!), and eventually tipped over the edge, herself.
The show is still funny of course, and some of the re-imagined songs are strikingly entertaining. Under the musical direction of Mathew Frank, Whelan-Browne lets Britney's songs reveal the kind of telling stories often lost within their pop/heavily auto-tuned original versions. Familiar works, from Out From Under, to Toxic to Lucky are suddenly achingly autobiographical in content. The standout example is Baby One More Time, used to close the show. This was Spears' first ever hit, positioned at the time as an energetic, back-for-more triibute to love. Now, it seems a weary, here-we-go-again lament to innocence lost, and what can go wrong when a young woman becomes too famous, too needed, and in some ways no longer needed at all.
It is to the credit of Whelan-Browne, Bryant and Frank that ultimately, BRITNEY SPEARS: THE CABARET is more paean than parody. Together, they make just enough fun and no more, entertaining their audience with an affectionate, insightful look into one of the biggest pop culture icons of our time.

Heidi Klum Selling 'little Piece Of Heaven' For $25 Million - 28 Jul 2014 18:23

June 30, 2014 at 1:42 PM ET
German-born supermodel and "Project Runway" host Heidi Klum is selling her home in Brentwood Estates - the foreclosed mansion she bought in 2010 with then-husband Seal.
The listing website declares the Mediterranean-style villa "has been given the Heidi makeover." The eight-bedroom, 10-bath, 12,300-square-foot estate on 8.5 acres is just off Mandeville Canyon in one of L.A.'s most prestigious neighborhoods.
The listing was first reported in The Wall Street Journal.
The home had been sitting on the market vacant for about two years before Klum purchased it, said listing agent Lynn Teschner of The Agency. When Klum visited, she was worried about how long the home had been empty because she had four small children and wasn't looking for a fixer-upper.
But Klum said in a statement that she fell in love. "I honestly felt that I was no longer in Los Angeles and instead was strolling the gardens of a home in the south of France."
She bought the home for $14.2 million.
Klum spent several million fixing it up - restoring doors, windows and thresholds, designing her dream closets, and adding home technology and security. She added a master bathroom with a view of the Pacific.
"By the time we finished," she said, "the house was as incredible as its grounds and views. Sometimes I sit in the garden, drinking my coffee, looking at the Pacific, and really feel it is a little piece of heaven."
At $25 million, the listing is half the price of a custom Mediterranean estate model Gisele Bundchen and football star Tom Brady put on the market a few months ago. They ended up selling to Dr. Dre for $40 million.
Klum is saying "auf wiedersehen" to her super-estate at a time when very high-priced homes are flying off the market in L.A.
The home has a motor court with a fountain, an infinity-edge pool and spa, a koi pond, a formal rose garden, a rolling lawn for golf putting and driving, a children's playhouse and slide, and "secret gardens." And that's just outside - with ocean views.
Inside, the dining room was imported from Paris, where it was a private dining room in a hotel. It was reconstructed in the home by the previous owner. In the library, there is an ornate wooden bookcase that came from Napoleon's French country home.
Klum has moved on to "another project" in the Los Angeles area, her agent said - a new home she wants to fix up.

L.A.'s Just One Eye Fetes Jeweler Wilfredo Rosado In Paris - 11 Jul 2014 01:55

Tags:

The event: New York-based jewelry designer Wilfredo Rosado and Los Angeles boutique Just One Eye joined forces in Paris on Tuesday to celebrate Rosado's new collection with an intimate dinner at Caviar Kaspia. Rosado's jewels are celebrity favorites and have been spotted on Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia Roberts and Rihanna, among other A-listers.
Why Paris? "I felt Paris was the right place for me to show my collection," said Rosado. "I have an atelier in Paris. Everything there is done by hand."
Meanwhile Paola Russo, co-founder of Just One Eye, was in Paris to view showings of the men's, resort, pre-fall and select haute couture collections. She decided to put together a dinner for Rosado, since the store carries the line and plans to soon set up a boutique section dedicated to it.
"We've had overwhelming success with his collection in our store," said Just One Eye buyer Farrah Katina, who confessed an initial nervousness because of the jewelry's lofty price tags.
The crowd: Rosado and Russo welcomed guests including couturier Alexandre Vauthier, Hervé Leger founder Hervé Leroux, actress Clara Paget, jeweler Eugenie Niarchos, model Lily McMenamy, star hairstylist John Nollet and fashion stylist Tina Leung.
The jewels: For the new collection, ranging in price from $15,000 to $560,000, Rosado said he took inspiration from the artist Cy Twombly. "It's really about this sort of frenzy in his artwork," Rosado said, describing one piece as having "an insane scribbling effect using gold and diamonds."
The scene: Guests gathered for champagne in the intimate space on the restaurant's second floor, where we chatted with the creator of the brand Herve Leger, who now designs under the name Herve L. Leroux, about the origins of his iconic bandage dresses.
"I saw these shining Lurex bands in the garbage, and I said, 'Can I have them?'" he recalled. "I started putting the bands on a mannequin, and it was an immediate success." His Herve L. Leroux line, he said, consists of "sexy, elegant, still hugging-body dresses," worn by stars such as Taylor Swift and Salma Hayek.

Steve McQueen Documentary To Air On Spike TV Tonight - 11 Jul 2014 01:54

Tags:

Spike TV will air a 90 minute documentary called "I Am Steve McQueen," honoring the actor and racing driver whose nickname was The King of Cool. The show will air tonight at 9 PM Eastern.
Narrated by Robert Downey Jr., the documentary will highlight McQueen's life, including the important attributes that separated him from the rest of Hollywood. Well known personalities interviewed include Gary Oldman, Pierce Brosnan, and Marisa Miller, as well as McQueen's family, including children and grandchildren, two ex-wives, and his widow.
Steve McQueen was best known for his acting, but he had a penchant for racing as well. In the eyes of the automotive world, his two standout achievements included the classic racing movie Le Mans, and the chase scene in Bullitt. He regularly competed in races across the world, often competing against some of the best drivers of the time period. When McQueen raced at the 1970 12 Hours of Sebring in a Porsche 908; his team finished first in class, and second overall behind a Ferrari raced by Mario Andretti.
McQueen's passion for racing and acting was not a rare occurrence, though. Some of Hollywood's top actors have been known for their exploits on the race track, including Paul Newman, Patrick Dempsey, and Eric Bana.
I Am Steve McQueen will be the second of such films shown on Spike TV, following I Am Bruce Lee, released in 2012. In fact, McQueen and Lee were friends with each other until Bruce Lee's early death, where McQueen served as a pallbearer.
"In a time of social upheaval, McQueen's art imitated his life through the cinematic expression of his own true essence," said Derik Murray, Executive Producer of I Am Steve McQueen. "McQueen became a symbol of American freedom and individuality and this documentary truly captures his unforgettable spirit."
McQueen was at one point the highest paid actor in Hollywood, with an impressive background of movie credits including roles in The Great Escape, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Magnificent Seven, and The Sand Pebbles - a performance which earned him an Academy Award nomination.
Decades after his death, Steve McQueen's legacy remains as strong as it ever was. Items associated with McQueen have consistently fetched high prices at auction, and vehicles are certainly no exception. The Gooding Pebble Beach auction will feature an authentic Porsche 917K, the very same chassis which McQueen used while filming Le Mans. Early predictions have the 917K possibly breaking the $20 million barrier, well over the $10-$15 million of other 917s.
I Am Steve McQueen will air Tuesday, June 24 at 9 PM Eastern on Spike TV.

Megan Fox Got Into A Verbal Run-In Altercation On The Set Of TMNT - And She Still Can't Let It Go! - 04 Jul 2014 01:20

Nothing grinds a New Yorker's gears more than being held up in tourist traffic as they make their way to work!
Even if it's Megan Fox who was partially responsible for the hold-up!
When the brunette beauty was on-set filming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the middle of Times Square, Megan said she was yelled at for "hindering their commute" and she had the best response to their attitude!
She recalled that specific event and said:

"It's like, we're working, too.
We're making a movie right now. You're in it. Go see yourself in August. You're a pleasure."

LOLz!
That person may have been late to work that day they were filming, but at least they got something cool out of it, right?
How many people can say they appeared in a Michael Bay film by accident because they were just traveling to work??
Not many, that's for sure!
