McDaniel, Frances Swift
Frances Swift McDaniel, 93, formerly of Fairlawn and Waiteville, W.Va., passed away October 5, 2014 at Richfield Recovery & Care Center in Salem. Frances was a Rosie the Riveter during World War II at the Glenn L. Martin plant in Baltimore.She went on to be a resourceful farmer, seamstress, cook and all-around problem solver on small subsistence farms in Beach Creek, N.C. and Waiteville, W.Va.She was a mother that valued education for her daughters and made sure they went to college even when the family had very few resources.She was a grandmother who fought for the last Cabbage Patch doll in the store and taught her grandchildren how to gather eggs from the chicken coop and understand that it was okay for the dog to kill a groundhog in the garden.She never found an obstacle she couldn't overcome and has left a legacy of educated, successful children and grandchildren. She was born in Cove Creek, N.C. the daughter of the late William Butler and Ada Warren Swift.She was preceded in death by her husbands Harold E. McDaniel and Elwin W. Epperly; brothers Willis, Paul, James and Ray Swift; and sisters Emogene Green and Kate Sweeney. Survivors include her daughters, Janet McDaniel and husband Bruce Blaylock of Salem and Waiteville, W.Va., and Carolyn and husband Darrel Rogers of LaPlata, Md.; brother, Clay Swift of Elizabethton, Tenn.; stepchildren, Doris Linkous, Randell Epperly, Anna Handy, Clara Martin, Marie Eanes, Reba Weeks, Loretta Bedia, and Michael Eanes; grandchildren, Rebecca Alley McLaughlin, Matthew Alley and Nick Rogers;great-grandchildren, Declan, Quinton and Everett McLaughlin and Sean Rogers; 21 stepgrandchildren; and 24 stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces; and nephews. The family would like to say a special thanks to David, Michelle and the rest of the staff at Richfield 4 East. We appreciated their kindness, concern and thoughtfulness throughout her time there.In Frances' final hours the nurses of Good Samaritan Hospice were also a great help and we thank them for their work. The family will receive visitors on Monday, October 6, 2014from 5to 8 p.m. with a scripture reading between 7 and 8 p.m. at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, October 7, 2014at 11 a.m. at the New Zion Church in Waiteville, W.Va. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Waiteville Community Center or Cemetery, c/o Jean Rock, 3182 Waiteville Road, Waiteville, WV 24984.
